CARMEN’s Executive Director, Simon Forde, held a lunchtime meeting on 19 October 2010 organised by the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at the University of California at Los Angeles. The hour-long format offered the opportunity for a detailed comparison of American funding and research structures with the large-scale collaborative laboratories that are being promoted by national funding agencies in Canada, Australasia and across Europe. The meeting reinforced the message that private foundations are a good alternative source of funding, and often fund pure research. Two projects that could be developed under the auspices of CARMEN were discussed.
